death of a radiator

posted by Majestic Ape at 1:18 PM

Ape Van smoked itself out last night in the high sierras. Our heat gauge is broken so suddenly the van was just full of smoke. We got towed to Truckee, CA (home of the Donner Pass and Donner Lake) and spent the night in the only available hotel for $208.00. Reno show-cancelled.

This morning we find out we need a new radiator. Cost- $753.00. Hopefully we will get out of here by 2pm. We have a 9 hour drive to Salt Lake City and we lose an hour. If there is more than one mountain, we are screwed.

At best, we arrive in Salt Lake at 11:30pm, load directly on stage, and rock hard!

Cross your fingers. Or don't.

Ah,van problems. You have my sympathies. I remember waaaay back when we purchased our 'King Face' van. Bum radiator, which we found out by taking it to Boston and back, stopping about every 90 mins to let it boil over, after which we'd fill it back up. Scream's Pete Stahl helped our Markie put in a new one. We had the exhaust issues, too. I recall hitting the Penn TP on the way home from somewhere, rounding one of its many twisty turns, and watching via the side mirror the sunlight glinting off our pipe extender as it went rocketing off down into a ravine. And we had 3+ hrs til home. We were actually punching each other, HARD, by the time we hit DC, and the buzzing in my head and extremities didn't go away for hours. Good times! Rock on, boys and girls! PB
